Damn spyware virus

OK, I just had a minor slugfest with one pesky piece of program that deposited kavo.exe into my c:\windows\system32 folder and did a bunch of changes to my registry, especially the ones concerning showing hidden files and such. A quick pop by Symantec shows that it was the worm called W32.Gammima.AG (that's what the guys in Symantec called it anyway).

So, How did I come across this? First of all, my Yahoo messenger crashed on login. So I went hunting around the net looking for answers. Then on a whim I went to see if there's any strange program that may be affecting yahoo messenger by checking the startup part in the registry. Lo and behold! A strange entry pointing to c:\windows\system32\kavo1.exe was staring me in the face. Another quick check through the internet identified the worm, and its characteristics. Another nasty thing it does is make each of your drives Autorun the worm program whenever you try and double-click on a drive, so it reinfects your machine if you didn't clean it out. Luckily I caught this thing before it could do its magic after a restart.

So if any of your programs start to behave strangely, be afraid...

Damn, I'm way past my bedtime :(

Got me some more books on Drizzt

Ahh, I finally got some books to add to my collection. This time it was The legend of Drizzt series by R. A. Salvatore (the 2 gift sets of Books I-III and IV-VI). I bought the books through a friend that went to KL, which cost me about RM170+, plus another RM70+ in courier fees. But oh well, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go splurge on something that you know will not have you hanging on with regrets on "why didn't I buy it when I had the chance..." kinda feeling.

A little bit of background: I bought book 1 in the series about a month ago from Kinokuniya which has a branch in KLCC. I first heard about this series through a local forum and decided to try read one of the books just to see what's it all about. Oh well, I seems that I got hooked...

Anyway, here's a mugshot of the books I bought, courtesy of Chucky Studios :P

The series is about a Drow warrior named Drizzt, who does not like being a regular Drow. Anyway, it all leads to conflict with his kin and all sorts of trouble...

Pretty good read.

Macro experiment

Had fun trying out the reverse-lens technique on several subjects around the house.

What I did was use my Canon 400D with the kit lens mounted with my 430EX flash, and additionally I used a 50mm F1.8 lens held in front of the kit lens, but in reverse! Ya, it is a chore trying to hold a small camera mounted with a flash in one hand while trying to hold another lens in front of the camera, but wok the heck, it is worthy of an experiment!

The first subject is a household pencil, nothing fancy:

The round shadow you see circling the pencil is the outline of my 50mm lens.

Next we have a shot of the point:

And a REAAAALL close up of the pencil's point:

And then my mom found a black caterpillar crawling around outside the house a few days after I shot the pencil (ya, lazy to update blog, so what...) and here's a headshot of the little fella:

Hope I can find more interesting stuff to shoot.

Nissan beauty photography contest

I went to the Nissan beauty photography contest that was held at 3rd beach, Tanjung Aru last Sunday. The event was scheduled from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. but as usual, nothing started on time :)

The event was sponsored by the Sabah Professional Photographers' Association along with Angkatan Hebat as Co-sponsors and of course Nissan provided the cars. There was another company that was involved in the sponsoring of this event, but I can't remember what it was. Will update later...

OK, updated with pics of the models (cars and humans). Not all of them, since I'm still in the process of sorting out and cropping the best pics (and fixing those that need fixing). Enjoy...
